6. Answer any three of the following in about 100-120 words:
(a) Write a summary of any one of the following poems:
(i) An Epitaph
(ii) Ode to Autumn
(iii) Song of Myself.
Answer – (i) An Epitaph: The poet feels intense sorrow for a dead lady who is lying in her grave. He thinks that she was the most beautiful lady in the West Country. She had the habit of moving here and there. The poet was attracted towards her extraordinary beauty. He loved her intensely but she was faithless. Her faithlessness shocked him. After her death, he accuses her of betraying him. He consoles himself by reflecting on the transitory nature of beauty and human life. Beauty is not eternal. It disappears with age. So, one should not be proud of one’s beauty.
The poet’s beloved was faithless to him but he remembers her even after her death. The poet says sadly that she will not be remembered by anyone after he dies.
(ii) Ode to Autumn: In this famous ode, Keats expresses his deep love for nature. He depicts the beauty and charm of autumn. He says that autumn is the season of mists and fruitfulness. During this season, there is neither the heat of summer nor the intense cold of winter. The rays of the sun help in ripening fruits in autumn. Nature looks beautiful and calm during this season. Farmers are very happy because they reap their crops.
The songs of spring cannot be heard in autumn but autumn has its own charming music. The music produced by gnats, lambs, crickets, robins and swallows is heard during autumn.
In this poem, Keats suggests that autumn is the season of ripeness and maturity. It depicts his unique pictorial art.
(iii) Song of Myself: In this poem the poet celebrates himself and identifies himself with others. While singing of himself, he suggests that all human beings are similar. He sees himself in others. He says that there is universal brotherhood among all human beings. He points out that every atom that belongs to him belongs to every human being. All human beings are made of the same soil. They are the children of the same God. Every atom of blood is the same in all human beings.
The poet loves nature intensely. He finds beauty even in a blade of grass. He believes that nature is full of life and energy. He wants to live in harmony with nature. He says that nature is the best teacher of man. He derives strength and guidance from nature. The poet is thirty-seven years old. He hopes that he will be active and healthy throughout his life.
The poet dislikes creeds and schools of thought which divide people. He believes that his ideas are not different from the ideas of others.

He assures the people of his country that he enters the highest office in the land with humility and total dedication. He pledges himself to the timeless values of the culture of India. Dr Hussain says that the whole of Bharat is his home and its people are his family. As the head of this family he will strive to make India a strong, beautiful and prosperous country. Dr Hussain has full faith in his people. He hopes that they will work hard for individual and social development. He will contribute to this task of national reconstruction.
(ii) A Pinch of Snuff: The short story “A Pinch of Snuff” is initially taken from “contemporary Indian short stories in English”.
The story begins with the visit of Nanukaka, the maternal uncle of the narrator at his house. The narrator who is an under-secretary in the government becomes much worried apprehencing his (Nanukaka’s) months long stay at his residence in Delhi, for meeting some minister. It is due to the fact that ministers do not meet people easily. But his mother has informed him about her brother Nanukaka’s ability to manage his meeting with the minister very well in a couple of days and that has removed his worriedness. The narrator receives Nanukaka, and comes along with him at his residence. From there he drove Nanukaka to the North Block to meet the minister. They return back being disappointed as the meeting could not be materialised. Again on the persuation of Nanukaka they go to Sohanlal Rati Ram, the party Boss in Delhi. Nanukaka cleverly manages to hold a long talk with him. He also gives Sohanlal false assurances about his son’s posting in Balance Ministery through the ambassdor Hazrat Barkat Ali. They return back in happy mood. The next morning again Nanukaka insists him to meet welfare minister. A princely outlandish luxary car is being arranged fram a show-room furnishing false imformation to them.
This story also delivers message that cunning and crafty people like Nanukaka become successful in their wrong and immoral acts, befooling others. Simple, pious and morally high people have to suffer much because of their goodness. The accuracy and the profound comedy of malgaonkar’s narrative has built up reader’s excitement. “A pinch of Snuff”.means snuff to be taken in small quantity.
(iii) The Earth: Johnson was a tenant farmer. He had rented a plot of land from a man named Sanders. He had a simple-minded son named Benjy. He was worried about him. He thought that Benjy was mentally weak. He took him to a doctor. The doctor told him that Benjy needed some occupation for his mental development. He advised him to let Benjy keep hens. So, Johnson bought some hens for Benjy. When Benjy returned from school, he fed the hens and looked after them. In course of time, Benjy knew all the tricks of the trade. He sold the eggs and put the money into a white basin kept in the kitchen. After some time, his father opened an account in the bank and deposited the money received from the sale of eggs in the bank. When Benjy left school at fourteen, he had about forty or fifty hens which were producing about two hundred eggs a week. He sold the eggs in the nearest town. His parents gave him a piece of land because he needed more space for the hens.
Johnson was a local preacher. He was very fond of talking to villagers. He did not pay attention to cultivation. So, he could not earn much. His simple-minded son, Benjy, prospered gradually. When Benjy was twenty-one, his father gave him the passbook. He looked at it and found that he had earned more than two hundred and thirty pounds. He put the passbook into his pocket without thanking his parents. His parents were very sad because their only son was completely indifferent to them. After some time, Benjy bought four acres of land next to his parents’ land.
After his marriage Benjy became indifferent to his old parents. He was so selfish that he neglected them. One day he told his parents angrily that they must leave his house. They were shocked because they did not have enough money to rent a house. They realised that Benjy was not right in his head. After about a week Benjy drove his parents into the town. He told them bluntly that they would be better by themselves in lodgings. He did not show any sign of normal emotions.

(a) Discipline
(b) My Happiest Day in School
(c) Noise Pollution
(d) Many hands make work light
(e) My Aim in Life

It is a basic need of our life to maintain and move towards success. Discipline is the only mantra of human beings to be successful in life.
(b) My Happiest Day in School
I was a student of Adarsh Vikas Vidalaya. I haven’t spent all these days with the same feelings. Here I spent days of happiness and days of sorrow, days of hope and days of despair.
Some days I was happy and some days I was sad. But the happiest day of my school life was 26th Jan, 2020, which was the award day of the year. Why I call it the happiest day of my school life, on this day prize distribution function was organized in the presence of a large number of people. On this day, I got the prize of standing first in the class examination. Also I got awards for good essay writing, good handwriting, good conduct, and good social service. So, this day was the happiest day of my school life.
(c) Noise Pollution
Noise pollution is when the level of noise increases more than the normal level. When the amount of noise exceeds, it becomes dangerous for living beings. Moreover, these unpleasant sounds causes several disturbances and create an imbalance in the environment. Firstly, noise pollution causes a number of hearing problems. (d) Many hands make work light
Many hands make light work is true in many facets of our lives. It is always easier to finish a job when several people pitch in to get it done. It is the concept of teamwork. Most companies boast of how teamwork is the backbone of the company. That is because they have figured out that when you have “many hands” in the job it makes for a much lighter workload for everyone. You can do work by yourself. You may even make some progress. That doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be easier if you had more people involved in it. There are those people that think working alone is much better. They feel that others get in the way and hold them up from anything being accomplished. That is only true if one of the team members is being lazy. If everyone works together, great things can get done in an amazingly short amount of time.

My aim will be not to earn money but bring hope to the poor and the suffering people. Thus by serving people, I will be serving God also.

When leaves come down from their branches, they cover the ground. All the trees are covered with snow and it’s a very beautiful sight. The poet, wants to say that in this season all the branches of trees become leafless. The wonderful bird Nightingle becomes dumb to see this season. He wants to do something from his hands but it becomes freeze, lonely on the separate knees.
(ii) Fire-Hymn
The poem ‘Fire Hymn’ is composed by the poet ‘Keki’ N. Daruwala who is the recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, Commonwealth poetry Award. He wrote poems in a totally impressionistic recording of subjective responses. In this poem he tells us about a burning ghat. The ghat was almost burnt but some portion of it was half burnt. Red light showed their way. The sky seemed like a red ball. The sky was full of smoke which came out from the fire. Many animals were killed and some of them were half cooked. The smoke swallowed everything and at last it turned into ashes, which were grey in colour. The poet says that he will never forget this fire. He further adds that he had not witnessed such huge fire for the last twenty years i.e. when he consigned his first born child to the flames. He says that he might have committed some mistake. So, he beg apology for the same. He did such things, for which he is really very sorry. The poet also shows his half burnt fingers. This was the fire which destroyed everything.

(b) Write a summary of any one of the following prose-pieces :
(i) The Artist
(ii) A Child is Born
(iii) India Through a Traveller’s Eyes.
Answer – (i) The Artist
‘The Artist’ is a fascinating Japanese short story written by Shiga Naoya a celebrated Japanese writer. In this story the writer describes how a budding artist of twelve years old only is misunderstood by elderly people and how his talent is damaged.
Seibei a school going boy becomes unusually interested in gourds. He buys long symmetrical gourds. He makes a neat hole at the top and extracts the seeds. He fills the hole with tea-leaves lest it gives unpleasant gourd smell. He then, polishes it with the wine left over by his father in the glass.
However, Seibei got a rude shock when he was caught-polishing a small gourd in the ethics class by one of his teachers. His gourd was confiscated and later given to an old porter of the school. The teacher not only chided him in the school, but he followed him to his house. He warned seibei’s mother that such things should not be repeated.
Seibei now turns to painting. He is chided for this also. He bears his agony alone. He has no complaints against his father or teacher. But the fact remains that the gourds he treated has artistic value.
The story is interesting. It has been nobly planned. It has artistic coherence and therefore it is an organic whole.
(ii) A Child is Born:
A child is born is written by germaine greer. A child is born in many societies human still go forth from their mother’s houses at marriage to live with a mother-in-law and the wives of their husband, brothers. It is a truism of anthropology that such woman do not become members of their family until they have borne a child. If a girl is lucky and her parents are a live, she goes to her mother’s house for the last months of her pregnancy and about the first three month of the baby’s life. When the baby is born it is an occasion of joy for the whole family.
(iii) India Through a Traveller’s Eyes
The prose is written by Pearl S. Buck. India had always been part of the background of my life, but I had never seen it whole and for myself until new. Yet the stories that our Indian family doctor and his wife told me when I was child had woven themselves into my growing dreams, and I had long read everything that I could find about that country. From my father I had learned of it through buddhism and the life history of the Lord Buddha. What did I go to India to see? Not the Taj Mahal, although I did see it and by moonlight, not Fatehpur Sikri, although I did see it, and not the glories of empire in New Delhi, although I did see them. I want to India to see and listen to two groups of people, the young intellectuals in the cities and the peasants in the villages. Thus, Pearl S. Buck has presented a vivid picture of India as she understood it during her visits.
